Legendary warrior exemplifies what it means to be a Marine

This is a story about more than bravery… It’s a story about character and leadership…

Legendary warrior exemplifies what it means to be a Marine

Stan R. Mitchell

Oak Ridge, Tenn.

P.S. Hat tip to Cpl. Garrett Carnes, a Marine who earned the Purple Heart in Afghanistan while serving with India Co., 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines. I noticed this story on his facebook timeline.

  1. Saw this earlier today. Took the bad guys weapon away from him and beat him to death with it. That’s hard core. SF.

    • Agreed, Mike. And that’s some serious quick thinking. I’m pretty sure I would have panicked that my weapon was empty and would have frantically tried to reload and I’d probably be just another statistic. Or, hell, I might have tried to run back behind some cover.

I DON’T think my first instinct would have been to rush him and take his weapon from him. (Oddly, it would have in a fight, since I’m always training my instincts with that through the martial arts, but on the battlefield, I’ve always been a fan of distance and accuracy.)

Huge props to him, though. He’s a warrior if there ever was one…
