Huge news re: Afghanistan

The United States is considering leaving no American troops behind in Afghanistan after the planned 2014 withdrawal date, U.S. officials said on Monday, amid ongoing tensions between the President Barack Obama’s administration and Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s government.

Speaking for myself, I’m pretty torn about this.

On the one hand, I think we probably should leave some special forces teams over there to do some necessary hunting.

But on the other hand, what do you do when you have to work with a guy like Karzai?

Either way, good for Obama sending a very public warning across Karzai’s bow. Keep playing, Karzai. Keep playing.

Call Obama’s bluff and we’ll see how fast he does what most of the public wants. And then we’ll see how fast your cowardly hide races out of the country once the Taliban no longer has us to worry about.

  1. Mixed emotions about this, too. What I would hate to see happen, is a repeat of history. For us, the U.S., to spend so much in lives and missing body parts for nothing. But then again, it wouldn’t be the first time. SF.

    • Yeah, agreed.

I’ll be honest, I think we have to blame mission creep on this one…

George Bush and his Generals scored the most magnificent military victory in possibly human history. We used some air power, some special forces, and mostly Northern Alliance and other anti-Taliban forces.

We won. We won big and we won fast. At almost no cost.

But then we decided we needed to do more than go after the Taliban for protecting bin Laden. We decided we needed to create a democracy and help this terribly destroyed, 30-plus-year war torn country rebuild…

And by making this decision, the Bush Administration made one of the biggest mistakes of its eight years, IMO.
